Mouse Clean/New Installation: If you have just bought a second hand system, but don't want all the software, applications and all the residue that is left behind when they are "uninstalled", that can cause the system to run slower than it otherwise would. I can wipe the hard drive clean and depending on the systems hardware, install and configure the Operating System from your original Microsoft installation disk, or upgrade as you desire. All of which can often be completed in your own home. Re-Installation: If an existing Windows Operating System has become so corrupted and unstable it is possible to Re-Install that same Operating System from the ORIGINAL Windows installation disk used initially. In this instance any other software that is installed on the Hard Drive will remain, but all the user defined system settings (ie. Internet Explorer, Outlook Express addresses etc) will be lost, so it is important to backup this data and make notes of any required Passwords. Windows: Windows has been around for a long time now and you would think Bill Gates would have sorted out all the problems by now, but lets face it, he hasn't. Software conflicts are still commonplace. Problems often occur when an old familiar piece of software won't run on a more recent Operating System. Backwards compatibility in windows does not cover all eventualities and what these days might be considered older systems of say 5 years, can struggle with some "older" software. Although each progressive version of Windows is undoubtedly an improvement on its predecessor, bugs are still being found and update packages are being produced by Microsoft on a regular basis to correct these bugs as they come to light. If you are unsure as to whether your Operating System, be it Windows 95 or the latest XP, is in need of a Microsoft upgrade (these are FREE downloads from the Microsoft Website) I will advise you and do a check to assess your needs. Other Software: If you are unsure, or are having problems installing any software, I can advise you and do the installation if necessary. However, I will not be held responsible if the software in question is incompatible with your system hardware. Any decision to install ANY third party software is ultimately yours. Always check for Minimum requirements (OS, CPU, Hard Drive space, RAM etc) or check out the manufacturers` web site before wasting your hard earned cash on something you may not be able to use. Again, it is the system hardware that ultimately determines how well an application or game will run. In some cases it may simply be a matter of installing a chunk of RAM. Windows Problems: This type of problem may be caused by a number of things such as, corrupted or wrongly deleted files, viruses or poorly written software. TIP: Always check any piece of software to make sure it is compatible with your system. Check Processor, memory and Operating System requirements. Much of the latest software packages are written to take advantage of the latest Operating System improvements and will not work on older Systems. To correct this kind of problem requires a varied amount of Detective work, dependent on the problem. For example, if the problem only occurs when a particular application is run, it may be a simple matter of uninstalling and reinstalling. As you install and uninstall a fair amount of software there is always the problem of changed System files. These files are often used by other applications and can cause all kinds of problems when they try to access them. The answer to many of these problems is to simply replace the files in question with the original files from a Windows instillation disk and can often be done in your home, often in less than an hour. Virus Problems: Most people have some form of anti-virus software that either comes installed on a new system or can be bought or simply downloaded from the web. The problem is, that unless you have one of the more expensive BUSINESS type packages, your software will simply not keep up. New viruses are being created and pushed out over the web on an almost daily basis (check out the list below) and the anti-virus software producers will only bring out an update maybe once a week or for some of the cheaper packages, only once a month. These updates are only available to you if you keep up your subscription payments. If your system begins acting strangely and you suspect a virus you can check your system by using this..... If the scan does detect anything and you have little or no experience in dealing with this kind of problem, your best course of action is to make a note of all the details the scan lists, then shut down your computer and either contact me, or someone you know that can help. Here's why……… Viruses are small pieces of code that are "made" to replicate themselves and if you do keep on clicking those little icons and launching applications, they will spread throughout your system and can cause irreparable damage. Recovering a system from a virus attack can be a long protracted affair and there is almost certainly going to be data loss. However, if the task is done properly, the amount of loss can be reduced. |
